“HE’S GOT A GUN!” (USA Today Images)

At some point, this country is going to have to have a serious talk about national security. Because the Secret Service has actually been threatening to kill mascots for far longer than we all want to admit.

An excerpt from the book Yes, It’s Hot in Here: Adventures in the Weird, Woolly World of Sports Mascotswhich we’ve pulled from the Huffington Post, is…

If the Philadelphia Flyers eventually lose their first-round playoff series with the New York Rangers as they did Game 1, Jason Akeson’s four-minute high-sticking penalty will live in infamy as one of the turning points.

Should the orange and black go on to…

The Evster’s NBA Playoff Preview

The Evster’s NBA Playoff Preview

This is not an NBA Playoff preview. I don’t know why I called it that. I guess I figured no one would click on a link titled “Some Things The Evster Felt Like Talking About This Week on a Blog That Actually Pays Him to Write Stuff.” But then again, it’s not like you think you’re about to get legit NBA analysis here. You know what you’re getting into. This post is written by the same guy who…

Ugh. That was not fun.

Luckily, it was just the first game of the series and Sunday’s Game 2 is a whole new ballgame with a clean slate.

Getting to know the enemy: Four under-the-radar Rangers the Flyers have to keep in check

Getting to know the enemy: Four under-the-radar Rangers the Flyers have to keep in check

martin.st.louis

Leading into Game 1 tonight between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, here’s a look at four under-the-radar Rangers – ok, well, three players and one inanimate object – that the Flyers will have to keep in check in order to ensure success in the series.

You won’t see star goalie Henrik Lundqvist or star winger Rick Nash on this list because it’s fairly obvious…

The five best/worst tweets about Donovan McNabb’s mugshot

The five best/worst tweets about Donovan McNabb’s mugshot

source: The Maricopa County (Arizona) sheriff’s office released a mugshot of former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb on Thursday afternoon but it was initially unclear what alleged crime was committed. Deadspin then tracked down a criminal traffic citation from back in January, and PFT says the two are likely related.

It’s still not really clear what McNabb did to warrant the mugshot though.

Whoever’s in own goal not Flyers’ gravest concern

Whoever’s in own goal not Flyers’ gravest concern

The news that Steve Mason is out for Game 1 of the Philadelphia Flyers’ first-round series versus the New York Rangers hurts. The possibility he could miss even more time with an “upper-body injury” stemming from a controversial collision against the loathsome Pittsburgh Penguins would be a huge blow to say the least.

Yet the Flyers might have bigger problems on their hands than who’s in goal,…

“I couldn’t let [Voracek] do it alone. After dinner last night I went to the drug store and got the Just for Men.”

That was Scott Hartnell’s explanation for the dark dye job on his playoff beard this morning. If you missed it, Jake Voracek showed up at practice yesterday with a dyed beard of his own.

The best thing to come out of all of this? The way Wayne Simmonds says the word “gingers.”

Amazing.

“I don’t know. Those guys are gingers. They should probably stick to being gingers,” Simmonds said.

Brett Brown is absolutely nervous like the rest of us about the NBA Draft Lottery

This embed is invalid

Brett Brown tells it like it is. That’s one of the things most Philadelphians like about him.

When the guys in suits on Draft Lottery Night reveal the teams hidden in those cards determined by some ping pong balls bouncing around, Brown is absolutely going to be nervous.

“That night when you find out where you pick is a nerve-wracking night for me,” Brown said after the…
